I Love Smoothies

For the first time in my life, I added spinach to my smoothie. I love spinach and pretty much any greens, but I felt the need to try something a little different. I have never considered adding greens to my smoothies, for the simple fact, that every person whom I have encountered, who drank vegetable smoothies, were either on a diet, detox and expressed their dissatisfaction in the taste. I’ve always whipped up my smoothies with fruits and only fruits.  I have made drinks with vegetables, they just never made way into my smoothies.

Strawberry Pineapple banana Smoothies!

Now that I am on my healthy journey,  and since smoothies have now become a regular part of my diet, I decide to deviate from the norm.

My children loves smoothies. It’s usually a combination of strawberry, banana, blueberry and pineapple.  My son D’angelo has a new claim: He doesn’t eat spinach. Whatever! He has eaten spinach on numerous occasions, BUT…. since my nephew Jahsya, whom I may add, does not eat anything at all, spent the weekend with us,  his opinions have been influenced. NOT FOR LONG. Jahsya’s mother speak so proudly of her child’s reluctance to eat meat. I have always been told that he only eats vegetables.

Smoothies and more Smoothies

Now being the foodie that I am, I was under the impression that his mother had him on a diet which  was  inclusive of vegetables and only vegetables.  If Jahsya was my child and being the mother that I am (a foodie), I would have introduced him to every vegetable on the planet. But I fail to remember that I AM indeed a foodie…and not the average diva.

Now…being the excellent over magnificent, health conscious  aunt that God created me to be, I made Jahsya a summer salad with a glass of  strawberry, banana, pineapple smoothie. (He asked if he could take the wine glass home and I told him that he could). I didn’t offer him the meal I had prepared, because I cooked meat and he doesn’t eat meat. (By the way, that’s Jahsya’s salad and smoothie in the photo above).

I notice that he removed the strawberries from the salad, so I asked “why?” He gave me some “cocakamamie”  story about if he ate it together with the salad, it would be the onstart of a headache. Whatever. So being the patient and loving aunt that I am, I offered him a salad plate, so that he could separate the strawberries from the artisan lettuces. Later, I noticed that he was sort of test tasting the lettuces.  I looked at his plate and noticed that he hadn’t even started on the salad. At that point, I realized he was not into “MY” kind of veggies and pretty much told him to have a bowl of cereal and stop playing with my food.

I later phoned his mommy dearest, Oyoka, to find out why her child isn’t eating his veggies. She properly put me in my place, and accused me of having her child in a “cultural shock” each time he visited my home, and that my home is the only home that has 100 different types of bread, challah, pumpernickel etc etc.

This is a perfect example of why you shouldn’t allow greedy children to hang around picky eaters. They can and will influence their opinions….AND THIS IS WHY MY SON, D’ANGELO CLAIMED HE DOESN’T EAT SPINACH.

I said to myself: “Really, you don’t eat spinach, huh? You just gobbled it up last week, when it was sauteed with the swiss chard and beet root leaves. We’ll see about that!”

Well,  I did what any loving mother would do. I blended the spinach into the strawberry, pineapple, banana smoothie and D’Angelo said it was d’luscious. I still haven’t informed him that there was spinach in it. Why would I? After all ….he doesn’t eat spinach!

As for the purple beets smoothie, he wasn’t going to touch the beets. I don’t know what it is but he has something against beets.  He was already aware that beet were added. He could tell by the color. But oh well, it’s his loss….I will find a way to trick him into eating his beets…. some other time.
