Right around Easter, it is traditional for every household in Jamaican to have at least one Easter Bun which they enjoy with cheese. I must admit I’m a big fan of Easter Bun. So huge of a fan, that I decided to bake my own Easter Bun and what a surprise it was! I wowed myself again with not one but three Easter Bun.
What really prompted me to bake my own, was my desire for all things natural. Most breads and pastries contain the chemical azodicarbonamide to extend the shelf life of the bread. It has been brought to my attention that azodicarbonamide is the same ingredient used in the making of yoga mats and shoe soles. Like seriously? No wonder folks have multiple chronic illnesses. That information was enough to encourage me to bake my own with pure, simple ingredients and massive flavors. Y’all know I’m a big fan of cooking from scratch.
Don’t get me wrong. I do not adhere to any strict diets. I don’t diet. I simply limit the use of processed food and avoid chemical and preservatives as much as I possible can. I prefer to use simple, whole foods, herbs and spices. .
Now what would and Easter Bun be without the cheese? That also is traditional in Jamaica. Bun and cheese seems to be a match made in heaven. Even when the Easter holidays are long gone, both children and adults relish in bun and cheese as an all time snack or lunch. I love Irish butter and Irish cheese, and it this case it my home made bun paired excellently with my irish cheese.
The next time you visit Jamaica, have the locals introduce you to bun and cheese….You will love it!
