In Jamaica, Irish moss is heavily consumed as a nutritious drink and is renowned as it holds the promise of endurance, vitality and enhancing libido. When most Jamaican men drink Irish moss, you can’t tell then nothing! They swear their sex game is gonna be so turnt up, that it miraculously transform them into a “bedroom bully” with the ideation that their love interest will be satisfied to the highest sexual level. Is that fact or fiction? Now, I’m not a man and I’ve never been with any man who drank Irish moss for the sole purpose of sexual gratification, so I don’t know.
What I do know, is that when I personally add Irish moss to some of my smoothies, I am energized like a ma’phucker! For real real though. So those claims could possible be true. At any given time, I can add several things in my smoothies to up the nutritional ante, so I’m still in experimenting mode to determine if it’s the Irish moss or the other agents. I’m so not ready to share that info, cause I think I’m on to something huge here.
If you have never seen or heard of Irish Moss, this is it in its raw state.
I have placed it in a bowl of water to demonstrate how it blooms (doubles in size) when added to water. Usually I submerge the entire seaweed under water, overnight. I added less water just so you could see the blooming effect, up close.
The most popular and traditional preparation method (for Jamaicans) is to boil the Irish moss with guar gum, linseed and isinglass until it becomes smooth and gelatinous, then it’s sweetened with condensed milk and lots of warm spices which is absolutely d’luscious, if I do say so myself. I used to boil Irish Moss until I discovered that it’s edible in the raw. In my opinion, the nutrition factor is amplified when earth foods are consumed in it’s whole, natural and unprocessed state.
Nowadays, I skip the boiling process and consume it raw. Unless I have a special order to prepare the traditional Irish moss, I personally create my smoothies with raw Irish moss, then explore the possibilities by customizing this awesome seaweed into whatever flavors I desire.
I just realized that I’ve referred to the Irish Moss as a seaweed twice and you’re probably wondering what the heck I’m talking about. Yes, it is indeed sea weed; seafood and an an excellent source of iodine which is necessary for thyroid support. So, if you have thyroid issues, this is definitely something you may want to consider adding to your diet.
Preparing the Irish moss gel in advance is a time saver. I simply grab the jar and add it wherever I need to boost the nutritional profile like I did in this video.
You know what’s interesting?
I even add it to my grandbabies food to provide just about ALL or MOST of the vitamins and nutrients that their tiny bodies require, but that’s a whole other story.
Unlike synthetic carrageenan found in most packaged drinks such as almond and soy milk etc., raw Irish moss and raw Irish Moss powder are natural carrageenan. I do my best to avoid synthetic vitamins as much as possible. Like, why bother with synthetic vitamins when you can get all you need from the real thing?
Regardless of your preferred method of preparation with Irish Moss, I strongly believe it should be a staple in everyone’s home.
