Ackee is Jamaica’s National Dish. On this website, as I mentioned before, you will notice a variety of remixes or variations of this dish. The traditional dish is prepared and served with Cod Fish. Here is another rendition of the famous ackee.
I was craving Salted Pork, but was unable to get to the Jamaican store that sold this ethnic product. I was in a time sensitive situation and had to hurry up and find something that was equivalent or at least provided me with a similar taste. I went to a supermarket that specializes in Latino products, and lo and behold, I stumbled upon Smoked Pork. Smoked pork can be found in most supermarkets, but I chose this particular Latino supermarket because I notice that their eating habits are similar to Jamaicans and are stocked with a variety of Jamaican products. Oxtails, goats, fowl, whole pigs etc, are just a few of the items that I am able to purchase there. While shopping, I always seem to be engaged in conversations with Spanish speaking individuals. Why? They too, are curious about how we (Jamaicans) prepare our dishes with these products that we utilize in common.
I thought only Jamaicans were privy to ackee, until one of my acquaintance of Cuban descent informed me that her family prepares ackee with chicken. At that moment I thought, “how interesting!” Reason being, this wasn’t a popular dish in my household. My grandma probably wasn’t a huge fan of preparing this dish with chicken. I have recently become aware that many Jamaicans also prepare ackee with chicken.
Ackee is rather versatile. I enjoy cooking and eating this dish and I can’t wait to prepare and create another remix.
