It took me a while to get accustomed to eating and enjoying crabs in the United States. My excitement for crabs quickly faded when I realized that there was absolutely no comparison to eating crabs back home in Jamaica. I was disappointed by the taste of crabs at every establishment that I had encountered, ordered and attempted to eat crab. It was bland and served with plain ole’ melted butter. I’m all for melted butter but I wanted seasoned crabs; you know….the ones with lots of flavor!
On just about every neighborhood in Jamaica, there is someone selling crabs. There is usually someone selling roasted corn nearby, as well. Both the crab and the corn makes a perfect combination. In order for me to recreate that nostalgic experience, I had to get into my kitchen a boil my own crabs. My highly seasoned crabs. I’m big on flavor…depths of flavor.
The broth from the crab is super d’luscious. It can be used in other recipes as well. I enjoy drinking it. I save it, just so so that I can drink it whenever. It’s like a hot and spicy crab tea. It is as soothing as soothing gets.
My son D’Angelo is such an animal lover. He has always eaten crabs, but this time around he wasn’t too thrilled because the crabs were alive. He is child that will go fishing, catch a 10 pounder and then throw it back into the lake, because it needs to live. I feel really bad for him today, because he cried, but the circle of life must go on….
The crabs were divine! D’Angelo didn’t eat any, so that meant more for me and my friend Stacey. She packaged her portion to take home with her, but after the first bite, she sat down to devour the boiled crabs. Too funny! But I don’t blame her, they were darn spicy and d’luscious.
