Steamed Callaloo with Bacon and Avocado

I went to Bravo Supermarket this morning and I have NEVER EVER seen such beautiful  bunches of callaloo in my life! I mean, there isn’t one blemish and they are extremely long. I have tried my best to display them on my dining table, so that you would be able to get an absolutely gorgeous view of them. They are beautiful aren’t they?

Back in July I did have some of these growing in my garden and wasn’t sure if it was callaloo due to the length.  I even posted the photo on facebook in an attempt to get some feedback on what this callaloo looking plant might have been. It seemed to be in the same plant family but it was a little unfamiliar. Here is a photo of my garden with a similar callaloo plant. In my opinion, it looks exactly like the one that I just purchased.

I wasn’t too sure because I have never really seen any callaloo plant stand  as tall as this one did. I mean the the stalks were really long. Here is a better shot.

I didn’t even cook the ones in my garden because I wasn’t sure what the plant was. But guess what? I will be planting the buds from the ones that I just purchased from the supermarket.

Anyway, back to the story. As soon as the employees brought out the boxes of callaloo, THEY WERE GONE! So I went to the back  of the store and asked an employee to bring out another box. I even brought a callaloo leaf with me…..you know….they all speak Spanish, and I wanted to show them exactly what I wanted.
I said to the employee “the box is empty.”
He replied, “you want bociemti?”
I said, “no I want callaloo, but the BOX IS EMPTY.”
He replied, “no more.”
Myself and others were a little disappointed because everyone seemed to want some of this hot stuff. Well, there was a really nice Jamaican lady who overheard my conversation. She had her cart full of callaloo….looks like she took what was in the whole darn box. Anyway she made me an offer: A bunch of callaloo from her cart. I thanked her kindly for sharing.

While I was browsing through the other isle, a Jamaican man who also wanted some callaloo saw me and said, “They just brought out another box!” He seemed to have his cart full too. Yall should have seen my big ass running over to the produce section. I darn sure wasn’t gonna miss the callaloo this time. So I did what any sensible human being would do. I got five bunches. I didn’t want to be greedy, so I was thoughtful of the other customers that were probably waiting as well. I’m gonna cut up these bad boys and freeze them….yall know I can’t eat this up all at the same time.

You probably think that I am a callaloo hoarder by now. I’m just really passionate about beautiful, wholesome food…and callaloo happens to be one of them. I prepare callaloo in so many different ways, I don’t even know where to begin. Topping it with avocados and bacon are one of my favorites ways to enjoy this traditional Caribbean dish. Avocados seems to be in season right now. They are either being sold at a two for one bargain or something like $0.58 per pound. I’m a bargain shopper, no …..let me rephrase that….I am an “educated consumer.” Yeah that sounds much better, doesn’t it?

Due to the avocado’s anti cancerous benefits and being a cancer survivor, I try to incorporated them into my diet as much as possible. One of my favorites are avocado smoothies. Yes I drink my avocados too. It’s creamy and buttery and oh so d’luscious in my drinks as well as with my callaloo. I’m getting hungry at the thought of introducing new creativity and life to this awesome plant. What shall I do with it in my next recipe? Stay tuned!
